#WednesdayWisdom Democracy is sustained by the ev #WednesdayWisdom

Democracy is sustained by the everyday habits of its citizens. It is not just a system of voting one feels obliged to exercise every few years. Authority must be questioned, diverse views must be heard, and fairness must be strived for—all of these are activities immanent in a democratic system.

This is a summary of the latest article on the Desh Apnayen blog, written by Ms. Kavita Anand who is the founder and executive director of Adhyayan Quality Education Services. She uses the Shishuvan School model to depict how introducing democratic institutions such as parliaments into schools can help dissolve hierarchies and turn students into stakeholders. Ultimately, if students are to grow into ACTiZENS, they must feel like active participants of the democratic state.

#MondayMotivation Active citizenship begins with #MondayMotivation

Active citizenship begins with noticing—and acting.

Just as students of Government HSS, Lalariya, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh did, as a result of which streetlights were installed, ensuring safety for the entire village community.

As part of one of the ACTiZENS’ Club activities, students from two government schools in Madhya Pradesh identified safety concerns within their school premises and took initiative to address them.

At Government High School, Ujjain, students raised concerns about unsafe playground conditions caused by potholes that posed a risk of injury. Guided by their teacher, they wrote a letter to the school Principal requesting action.

At Government High School, Jiran (Neemuch district), students highlighted the problem of overgrown grass and plants outside their classroom, which created fear of reptiles and poisonous animals. They too expressed their concern through a formal letter.

Impact: In both schools, the Principals responded promptly. The playground in Ujjain was levelled with murum (gravel), and the overgrown area in Jiran was cleared—making school spaces safer and more usable for students.
