Creating alert, informed and active citizens

Today, 30 January, marks Martyrs’ Day—a solemn Today, 30 January, marks Martyrs’ Day—a solemn occasion to honour the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day in 1948. Hence, we are sharing our February blog article a little earlier than our usual release date of the 1st of each month.

In this piece, Mr. Durgesh Kumar Bhaiya, School Engagement Officer at Desh Apnayen Sahayog Foundation, reflects on how the ACTiZENS’ Club programme helps students live Gandhiji’s vision of a responsible democracy—by practising the values of truth, duty, and participation through real-life, classroom-led activities.

Our guest author on the Desh Apnayen blog this month, Dr. Anita Patil-Deshmukh writes:
“When young people engage across differences of caste, class, gender, religion, and language, they learn to navigate disagreement, appreciate multiple perspectives, and build solidarity. These experiences cultivate empathy and inclusion—essential foundations for democratic leadership.

Participation, however, must be practised. Community-based learning spaces that emphasise dialogue, reflection, and collaboration allow young people to experience democracy as a lived process. Diversity within these spaces becomes a source of learning rather than division.”
